Tiger, Georgia

Tiger is a town in Rabun County, Georgia, United States. The population was 316 at the 2000 census. It was incorporated in 1904.

There are two popular legends as to how Tiger got its name. The first is that it was named after a Cherokee chief named Tiger Tail. The second (and more likely) story is that the name came from the cry of roaming panthers.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2), all of it land. Tiger's elevation is 1,963 feet, with several wooded hilltops reaching elevations between 2,100 and 2,200 feet. The town sits at the base of 2,856-foot Tiger Mountain, a prominent Blue Ridge Mountain peak.

Education

South Rabun Elementary School (grades K-2) is located near the center of Tiger. Just outside the city are Rabun County High School (grades 9-12), Rabun County Middle School (7-8), and Rabun County Elementary School (3-6).
