Sears Crosstown Building Memphis, designed by Nimmons and Company, construction started on February 21st, 1927. Opening on Aug 27th, 1927, the Sears Crosstown Building was the largest building in Memphis at the time with 650,000 square feet. At a cost of Five Million dollars the construction in 180 days, with crews operating 24 hours a day six days a week. Located at 495 North Watkins with 14 floors, and over Three thousand people attended the opening. This was Sears and Roebuck’s eighth regional distribution center. This Sears closed by the early 1990’s ending over 60 years of service to the mid-south.
