Wife of Dr. Samuel Dickins. Later, wife of John H. Morgan. Daughter of Isaac and Cinderella Bolton.
Josephine Bolton Dickins Morgan was mentioned in the will of Wade Hampton Bolton which left $10,000 each to Lavinia Bolton and the widow of Stonewall Jackson as the recipient of $5 "one sixth of what Judas Iscariot got" for her unlucky marriage. Samuel's father, Thomas, was a major player in the Bolton/Dickins feud lasting from 1857 to 1870 during which eight (or as many as twelve) people died. Partner in one of the largest cotton/slave trading firms in the South. A dispute arose when the firm bought and sold a 23 year old slave who was later proved to be an indentured and free. A shooting incident involving Isaac Bolton resulted in an expensive trial at which Ike was acquitted. An argument arose as to whether the expenses should be borne by the four partners (Wade, Isaac, an unrelated Washington Bolton and Thomas Dickins) or the brothers alone.
Numerous court battles followed, before and after the war, pitting Thomas Dickins and Sarah Bolton (wife of the deceased Wash Bolton) against Wade. There were family intricacies as Wash's sister, Cinderella, was Isaac Bolton's widow and Josephine Bolton, Isaac's daughter, married Samuel Dickins, Tom's son. Samuel became deeply involved in the feud when he led a posse to Alabama to avenge a murder attempt on his father.
Wade Hampton Bolton was shot by Thomas Dickins in July of 1869 and died shortly thereafter. Thomas Dickins, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds after being acquitted of Bolton's murder in 1870. Dr. Samuel Dickins died of an accidental gunshot wound in the autumn of that year.
